Ambs came to Michigan Software Labs in 2019 looking for a custom web portal to help managers track employee attendance by showing records of call-ins. Over the years, we’ve provided multiple enhancements to the platform—each focusing on improving functionality and user experience.

Several years later, the partnership continues. In 2024, Ambs once again reached out to MichiganLabs for a quick and efficient fix. Their legacy system's API had a pending update that would cause authentication to the application to break, leaving managers without crucial attendance data—making it difficult to plan shifts and manage staffing efficiently.

Delivering fast, high-value solutions

Given the urgency of the situation, our team quickly identified the necessary authentication fix for Ambs and prioritized additional reporting and filtering features for their users. Over six weeks, we delivered two releases, ensuring they gained immediate value as soon as the features were ready for testing.

We also were able to set up the authentication changes to work with both the current legacy API and the upcoming version, preventing downtime and avoiding the need for a tightly scheduled release.

The Ambs team made it easy for us to execute at a rapid pace by being responsive, highly invested in the web application’s success, and providing clear feedback on user needs.

One key to our success was the focused scope of the project. Leveraging our long-standing experience with Ambs and their system, we addressed each issue promptly, including:

  • Resolving the critical login problem,

  • Enhancing the search filters,

  • Adding email alerts for absences,

  • And updating the date range functionality.

Clear documentation for long-term success

"An unexpected bright spot of our project was the detailed documentation and deployment of our new software. This will allow us to seamlessly pick up where we left off for future versions,” Boatin added.

Beyond the typical README files, we developed detailed deployment guides—organized with a clear table of contents and call-out blocks for easy reference. This documentation enables the Ambs team to maintain the system and handle future updates on their own.

We also streamlined the deployment process. After completing two successful deploys, we documented the steps in detail—making future rollouts easier and more efficient with less risk of downtime.

A tailored tech stack

From the technical side, the web portal has a .NET backend and an Angular frontend. We used Microsoft SQL Server for the database, then integrated email functionality with SendGrid (an off-the-shelf component) so users would be alerted when certain criteria—like absences or tardiness—were met.
