Welcome iPhone 6 and Apple Watch

September 9, 2014

On September 9, Apple announced the new iPhone 6 and the Apple Watch. We decided to provide a quick breakdown of the new products for you. First, let’s start with the iPhone 6.

iPhone 6 – comes in two models the iPhone 6 and the iPhone 6 Plus

  • The iPhone 6 is 4.7 inches and is available in silver, gold, and space gray, iPhone 6 features an A8 chip, Touch ID, faster LTE wireless, a new 8MP iSight camera with Focus Pixels, and iOS 8. The iPhone 6 is only 6.9 mm thick.
  • The iPhone 6 Plus is 5.5 inches and is available in silver, gold, and space gray, iPhone 6 Plus features an A8 chip, Touch ID, faster LTE wireless, a new 8MP iSight camera with Focus Pixels, and iOS 8. The iPhone 6 Plus is 7.1 mm thick.

As developers we will be adding new image assets to our projects to support the 1334×750 resolution for the iPhone 6 and the very large 1920×1080 resolution for the iPhone 6 Plus.

Overall, we are excited to begin developing for these two new devices. One of our most favorite features which will be coming with iOS 8 is Continuity. According to Apple, this new feature will now be able to… “With iOS 8 and OS X Yosemite, your iPhone is seamlessly connected to your Mac and other iOS devices. Use Handoff with favorite apps like Mail, Safari, Pages, Numbers, Keynote, Maps, and more. Answer calls on your Mac or iPad. Send photo, video, or text messages from any of your devices. And use your iPhone as an instant Wi‑Fi hotspot.”

Next, let’s turn our attention to Apple Watch.

The new Apple Watch represents a new chapter in the relationship people have with technology. According to Apple, “it’s the most personal product we’ve ever made, because it’s the first one designed to be worn.”

The new Apple Watch will come in three distinct styles.

As developers, we are excited to begin working with the new Apple Watch. The smaller resolution and additional functionality will be a compelling challenge for our development team.

Here are some of the key considerations for developing for the Apple Watch:

– Integrating with the crown controls
– The square screen resolution including both the 1.5 and 1.7 inch screens
– Developing apps for the Apple Watch with the WatchKit development SDK

So, what about you? Will you be upgrading to the larger iPhone 6 or buy an Apple Watch? Tell us in the comments section below.
