Scott Schmitz

software developer

I started learning about programming by reading about game development in Visual Basic. It didn’t take long for me to become enamored with impressing my family and friends with simple command line “games” that would give snarky responses. This led me full of excitement towards a Bachelor of Science degree in Computer Science at Grand Valley State University. While at Grand Valley, I learned about the importance of designing and planning of the user interface. As the saying goes, “Good design doesn’t happen by accident.”

After graduation, I started as a Software Engineer at Dematic working largely in T-SQL, HTML, and CoffeeScript. It was during this time that I realized my passion for understanding what a user wants and giving it to them. It has many of the same challenges as game development, just a few less aliens. I am very excited to continue to my career at MichiganLabs while working on new and intriguing projects everyday.

After work, I enjoy dabbling in game development using the Unity Game Engine or challenging friends in FIFA. When I decide to break away from the screen I love spending time with my wife, Carla, and playing an endless game of fetch with my puppy, Ellie.
