John DeLong

software developer

With the aid of K’NEX, I discovered at a young age my passion for inventing and making my ideas come to life. I would spend hours on the floor building my own design of cars, homes, tools, and even a fully functional elevator. My constant curiosity for how things worked combined with a non functional computer I found in my parent’s basement is what eventually fueled my love for technology and my desire to pursue a Computer Engineering degree at Grand Valley State University. During my education there, I discovered programming to be the ultimate tool for designing, creating solutions, and making my ideas come to life.

After graduation, I started my career as a Software Engineer at Dematic developing tools to help customers manage their complex logistic systems. In this position, I gained a great deal of experience in backend and web development using languages such as T-SQL, Java, HTML, and JavaScript. But it was not until I joined MichiganLabs that I was able to pursue my true passion of mobile app development. MichiganLabs has been the perfect place for my curiosity and allows me to hone in on my skillset. Here creativity is encouraged and I love getting to share in the excitement as customers come to us with their idea for a great new app.

Even when I’m not at work, I often find myself doing app development as a hobby. My other interests include playing sports (basketball, soccer, football) and spending time with my close friends. At home, I enjoy working on projects around the house and spending quiet nights with my lovely wife Amanda and our curious cat. Together my wife and I lead a small group with our church and in my spare time you’ll find me reading about the latest tech news.
